Is this rhododendron on the way out?

Firstly does anyone know what this "disease" is? The black-brown-purple spots are on approximately 35% of the bush. Not so many Orange-yellow leaves, - they fell off immediately upon touching.
I am wondering if this bush is essentially on the way out, or whether it might survive.
I has actually flowered, so that is one thing . . .

On 2nd inspection I note a lot of the leaves are "sticky" and there are a number of small black flies on some of the buds.

If the leaves are sticky it could be some sort of bug that sucks sap.
The leaves may show signs of a fungal infection.
If it was dry at the roots for some time that may have weakened it, but it's flowering this year, so must have been ok for it last summer when the buds were forming.

But they're very tough and resilient plants.
Mine got to about 12ft x 12ft and after it flowered I cut the whole thing back to about 2ft.
It's regrown strongly and though I got no flowers last year, there are many buds bursting into flower this year and it's looking a lot healthier.
    I'd suggest a similar approach.

How it's being grown and where are also factors. Good airflow, the right soil, the right amount of moisture and good drainage, and the right site are what they need.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

I think the disease must be something that rhododendrons are susceptible to.
I was in the park today and noted the rhododendrons there had the same spots.
