Well that does not sound too bad @B3 if they are not actually eating much! What could they be eating then? Are they cannibals? You really made me laugh with your comment because I know what you mean...if I tread on the odd one by accident, I don't feel too terrible,... I don't think I want to know any more about your council bin but do feel free to tell me about plants you have that they definitely avoid....

That sounds reasonable and to be expected I suppose @floralies ...no rain here though so I am thinking maybe they are seeking moisture from the plants! Maybe I should hose the snails to give them a drink! ( I don't hose my plants though - I do drip-irrigation or watering-cans! )

Thanks for that @Lyn, you must be an expert on them! Do you keep your indoor snails for horticultural reasons may I ask? For example, to chomp down on excess leaves or something? Do they definitely not feel pain? I am fascinated that snails could be pets!!!

Thanks @arossrob I might try that. Can you post back on here when you have tried it with your findings? I would be very interested to know how it goes for you!

I think there's a misapprehension about frosts stopping them. If that was the case, we'd have very few here in most springs....
It's not so much the frosts stopping them but in a colder winter their active period would be shorter so less breeding etc, and I imagine there would be more hungry predators looking for them when it's cold. Apart from the drought last year they've had pretty favourable conditions for a couple of seasons here which I think is why we're having the population boom at the moment. It will be a good year to be a thrush chick anyway.
Yes lack of predators could be it! I have blackbirds blue tits, sparrows, wood pigeons for sure but I probably need mistlethrush too.... Arrgh

Thanks @JennyJ it does feel a bit like that kind of thing. It has been very dry here for at least the last month, but I think it was more rainy in february-march. A trip to the park with a bucket beckons for me!

Let you know C. ASAP. Just sprayed our plants with the solution and placed a chilli plant in the same place where my last log were demolished. The rest are kept safe and sound.
@clematisdorset. I'll tell you a few but there are threads with longer lists. Hardy geranium, veronica, penstemon, gazania, fuchsia, sedum, ferns, osteos when they get big, purple toadflax, pulmonaria, potentilla , geum, . I could go on, but you get the picture😊, I have an equally long list of things I'd like to grow but I'm not prepared to supply a snail/ slug banquet so I do without.. I would say though, fingers crossed, I haven't got the voracious Spanish slug.
Oh thank you @b3, very kind! Your garden sounds lovely I was thinking of buying some penstemons so you have convinced me and I would love the others too. I was losing confidence after finding the snails everywhere and I began to feel well and truly doomed Oh goodness Spanish Slug!!! It could be worse couldn't it?!

I 've lost most of my penstemons due to the weather last year but I'm waiting just in case before I fork out for some more but I wouldn't be without them.
