Installing a water butt round the corner from downpipe?

We'd like to install a water butt around the corner from where our downpipe is (where the bins are in the photo). Any idea how we could do this?

Thanks in advance!

That would be useful to me Wildedges, however I can't see how that would work for the OP due to the full height doors in the way?

I think the pipe would have to run between the door sill and the step.

You'd probably need to redo your gutter to run the other way - the only way to not get in a pickle with the door. But your phone line is unhelpfully fixed on the fascia. You may have to settle for a slimline one where the downpipe is

I agree with raisingirl, much better to move the downpipe to the left of the doors, then run a supported flexible pipe around the corner to the new waterbutt. I'm sure the phone line fixings could probably be moved slightly if need be and refixed to the fascia.

Where is the down pipe on the other side of the house? Can you not use that one.

It only needs a hosepipe connecting the pod to the butt so it should clip neatly under the door sill. It can be routed further out and buried though if there's an easy surface to dig up. Changing the gutter would mean adding a new gulley or sending the overflow across to that other outflow to the left if it's a combined system.

You could just run a downpipe from the guttering on the side of the house?

It's right above where you want the water butt.
  • A number of years ago I installed a water butt round the corner from the downpipe on my garage. It involved a couple of 90° turns of the piping. It worked for a year, but then I found the turns quickly got clogged with leaves, sycamore seeds, and general muck. After a couple of years I gave up, and returned the route of the pipe back to where it was.
I assume, @wideawakeclothing that your drain is directly below where the downpipe currently is, and it maybe best to put a couple of slimline butts there. Any 90° turn WILL clog, even if there are no trees in the immediate vicinity. Even the systems on the website provided by wild edges will need regular attention. It's a hassle.

Would it not be easier to move the barbecue[?] round the corner and put the waterbutt there? Much less bother  :)
When you want to use the barbecue, just bring it round. Surely it's easy enough to shuffle some of the plants around in that area to accommodate that.  :)
