A birds and the bees doggy dilemma!

Can’t find anything about this on the internet, hence the rather OT query.

My 10 month old girl is on her first heat and is clearly now at peak fertility. After teasing and flirting with 10-yr old Bill (castrated) for ages she finally got him interested and now they are totally obsessed. They’re at it all the time, not just innocent humping, It’s been going on for about a week now.

I have tried distracting and separating them but they whine like crazy and it seems mean to lock one of them in when they love the outdoors. I am rather embarrassed to call my local Spanish vet for advice as doubtless he will just laugh and say it’s natural.

OK she can’t get pregnant, but could this constant, er, penetration, be potentially be harmful to her re infection or future issues? Will poor old Bill die of heart failure?! Am I worrying about nothing?

    This is about dogs right? :#
    If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

    There is a spray you can get to disguise the female scent, which may change his behaviour. It won't change hers though, so might not work

    A sharp clap and calling him does separate them, I don’t physically try to do so, but it doesn’t last for long @pansyface before they are at it again.

    I was all for spaying her before her first heat but OH insisted it’s better for her to have at least one - there are health pros and cons both ways it seems. Conveniently, she is in the UK at the moment so not having to deal with the marathon bonkathon.

    @punkdoc 😂

    Doubtful @raisingirl as she is the main instigator, but many thanks for the suggestion. Perhaps asking for said spray will give me the excuse to call the vet for advice!

    You could get her booked in to be spayed at the same time if you're not planning for her to have puppies in future :).

    According to the PDSA @JennyJ it’s better to wait a few of months afterwards, but spaying is definitely on the cards..

     once she has had a season, you’ll need to wait for approximately 3 months – neutering sooner than this can cause ongoing hormonal problems”

    I guess the lead time for non-emergency appointments at your vets is shorter than at ours @Nollie . Here you'd need to be booking now for a routine appointment in a few months' time.

    Wow, that long @JennyJ? Here they would think you were weird if you tried to book a month in advance.

    All is quiet at the moment as it’s chucking it down out there so they are curled up in their baskets.
