Growing a species of grass within another

I have a newly seeded lawn made from large ryegrass normally used for animal feed. Don't ask how. :/ Is it possible to grow a dwarf species in the centre after lifting the field grass turf? Or will the field grass invade the central lawn? I see they achieve it on golf courses for putting greens amongst the rough.

Rye grass isn't a much of a problem spreading unless it seeds  . Most grasses ( including normal rye ) would die out on a golf green not tolerating close cutting except for a few species . Can you not hoe the newly germinated grass for the next few weeks and then start again with dwarf rye

That's good news then and a reason why putting greens can exist. Yes I could give it a go and try hoeing it out. It does grow deep in a short time and it's been growing for a month or more.

So I will take it back. Dwarf grass can grow under the taller rye.
