Acer tree - top half shrivelled

HeyHo!HeyHo! Posts: 113
Hope to get some advice.  :)
The 5ft tall acer tree is in a sheltered spot which gets dappled sunshine as there is another acer tree next to it.
I discovered that the top half is shrivelled and the lower half is fine!  Looking closely, there is 'scar' area on the trunk - not sure what is happening.  It has not been overwatered.
Should I chop the top of the tree to remove the shrivelled part?

It looks like you may have verticillium wilt sadly, top off shivered it not going to come back. They can live through it but it does ruin the shape of the tree, it may succumb to the disease eventually. Its such a shame Acers particularly the coloured bark ones are prone to such a nasty disease .

You could try cutting it off but I think that ultimately it’s a gonner.

I just noticed the same on one of mine so cut the affected branches off and it now looks awful.

Thank you, but not good to hear. I have no choice but to cut the top half and see how it goes  :'(   This was an expensive little acer tree. Hope verticillium wilt does not spread to other acer trees.
