Dwarf plum tree

I have a two year old plum tree that had a few blossoms on it this spring. It had lots of leaf buds but only about ten started to grow into leaves. Then suddenly they all went brown and brittle. The tree still has green under the bark but now has sticky amber coloured sap on some of the branches. The main stem is also sticky. I can't see any aphids. I am at a lost as what is wrong with it. It grew really well last year and had a few fruits. Any ideas on what the problem is and what I can do to save the tree would be gratefully received.

In the absence of any other replies, l've had a bit of a Google @sandrawarman69Ui_be3ha, and l'm wondering if it's because the tree was under stress last Summer due to the high temperatures.

Please can you give a little more information,  such as whether it's in the ground or a pot, a sunny or shady position, and whereabouts you are in the UK ( just a general location will be fine) ?
  • Hi AnniD

I bought two different plum trees at same time. They both grew well first year. The other one is in full leaf and doing well. They are both in very large pots in sun but have some shade from large grasses in front of them. We live just north of Doncaster. I have lots of other fruit trees in garden in large containers that are doing well.  So just thought when this one was struggling was because of a short cold snap we had. It started opening leaf buds and then they suddenly dried up. I water regularly. The leaky sap just appeared over a week. I have checked for any damage to tree but there is nothing. The small branches are still green under the bark. I am concerned it is some sort of disease or fungus that is in the root level. I tried looking on internet but nothing seemed to match the symptons on the tree.

Thank you for that extra information :) .
I must confess to having no knowledge of fruit trees whatsoever, l have never grown them.
l really hope that another forum member can advise you, there are people on here with an amazing  amount of knowledge 🤞.
