Does anyone know what this is ..... ?

Hi everyone

I have this plant in my garden and have done for several years. I have lost the tag and for the life of my cannot remember the name.
Its in a pot, comes back every year but doesnt flower ? If you know what it is, and whether it should flower or not please help.

Thanks all

It has a look of a climbing hydrangea but I don't have one so I can't really compare. If it is, I think they flower on older wood so if you're pruning it early in the year that might explain the lack of flowers. Growing in a pot isn't ideal either particularly if it's not a huge pot - it might not be getting enough moisture and nutrients.

    It is a climbing hydrangea

They don't flower much or at all when young but do flower on last year's wood as mentioned above.

A bit more about care here

I have a climbing hydrangea and that is what it looks like. It gets big and should be planted in the ground. Dig in some compost and fertiliser when you plant it and keep it moist. Once it's established it's pretty easy going.

Don't prune it this year and see what happens next year. Prune after flowering.

  • Thanks everyone, this is really useful. I appreciate the help alot

It might be tricky to repot it with it attached to the wall so you might have to detach it and then let it regrow. I think it would be happier in the ground but if you don't have a suitable space then go for a really big container.
This site https://diygardening.co.uk/our-plants/hydrangeas-in-pots/ suggests "Climbers and large hydrangeas should be grown in large pots at least 0.75 metres wide" but also says "Climbers such as the hydrangea anomala petiolaris can be grown in large containers but based on what I’ve seen. they are unlikely to reach their full potential of 12+ metres unless relocated to the ground."
