Garlic harvesting

Hi all, I planted garlic in 3 containers last October. Are they ready to harvest please? Some leaves are definitely turning yellow and bending

  • you need to wait till august.
those would not be even considered worth harvesting yet.
    unless you want mock chives.

Some garlic varieties are ready much earlier than August. My Extra Early Wight is ready to harvest in May/June, depending on the weather. In fact they are coming out tomorrow if the first one looks OK. My Solent Wight are ready in July/August. Do you remember what variety yours are? You could live dangerously and carefully lift one bulb. If you support it from underneath (trowel/spoon/stick), it should come out in one piece, without disturbing the others.

I’ve never heard of that one, so can’t tell if it should be ready sooner or later. I pulled one of my early ones up today and it was nowhere near ready. This is what they looked like. I’m thinking late June for them now. Some years they would have been further on

I would advise harvesting at least half of every pot there and using them as fresh green garlic, (lovely in salad, butter and pesto) that would give the others a better chance at getting to a decent size. As it is they are much to closely planted and probably won't come out much bigger than the cloves you planted.

Perhaps next year you could use a large trough and using Wight garlic space the individual cloves 10-15cm apart and 30 cm between rows.
