    Camassia :)
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained
  • Can anyone identify this plant seen at Dumfries House? Looks a bit like agapanthus but not quite - very vertical stems

You have your answer, as @JennyJ says it is a Camassia.
How can you lie there and think of England
When you don't even know who's in the team

They need to have consistently enough damp soil if you're considering getting some @sunshine in the garden. Damp, semi shade is the best site for them.  :)
I only grow the whites, as I don't like blue, and they're just starting to flower. I love them, but they're very messy when dying back - lots of substantial foliage, so bear that in mind too if you want them  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
