Transplanted sweetbay magnolia partly dying

I planted a young multi trunk sweetbay magnolia last late November or so but probably damaged a major root while doing so.  The biggest trunk got scorched (I think) when irrigation failed while I was away for a long holiday.  Some new growth are starting on the base of the trunk so I cut off most of the trunk and saw dark discoloration inside.  I wonder if it is root rot.  Question is until where should I cut off?I can still see discoloration inside the trunk.

Was it bought as a multi trunk plant?
It looks like a graft just below the grey label, and i'm wondering if the other 'trunks' are coming from below the graft? If it is grafted, the other 'trunks' need cut off at the point they join the rootstock.

  • Hi.  Yes it came as a multi trunk tree.

I can't give any advice in that case. It sure looks like a graft.
