What is wrong with my acer?

I have had this acer in a pot for about 10 years now.  I can't say it's ever exactly thrived in my care (I have been a very lazy gardener but would like to get better).  I haven't done anything different (ie nothing really) but this year it looks really bad.  I've moved house and it's in a new location.  I don't know if it might be suffering from the wind a bit?  This discolouration and drying up seemed to start on one side, the side that is hit by the wind, but it has spread across. We're closer to the sea but still half a kilometre inland.  Any ideas what might be wrong with it and anything I can do to help it?  Thanks for any advice.

Ten years in the same pot, it's probably starving. Can you repot it into something a bit bigger or put it in the ground?

Yes, it's a good point.  But would that explain this sudden deterioration?  I'm wondering if it needs more shelter?  I suppose I have been vaguely thinking that a pot this size would keep it sort of bonsai small.  Is that a wrong idea?  I don't actually want it to turn into a big tree.  But yes, there can't be any nutrients left in that soil.

Red acers will get scorched by strong sunlight more than the green ones. It also needs shelter from drying wind.
You can always prune it if it gets too big. I think it could do with shaping too but I don't know enough to advise you.
