where-to-plant

hi, can I plant a cotoneaster lacteus against a shed? If not, then how much space should I give it?

Hi Peegee, what's the aspect - north, south etc, soil type, is it a border alongside the shed you are planting into?  Cotoneaster lacteus can be grown as a hedge so I'd imagine it would be happy to be kept pruned to fit your area.  Do you have anything that it could be trained to on the side of the shed - trellis/wires, just to give it something to hang on to?

Thanks.  It's east facing, soil is clay (I think, suitable for azaleas anyway!)  I have a 6ft x 6ft square (used to have a greenhouse on plot) of soil with conifer hedge along south side  with shed on east side, other two  sides open.  Would like to have decent sized cotoneaster planted to try to conceal some of the shed. Plenty of sun, with some shade and pretty well protected. Live in the south east.

It's quite a large plant if not cut as a hedge, attractive to people and bird like the berries which arerelatively late to ripen. One would fill your space and a bit more. I like it grown as a shrub without being cut back

Thanks. would like to be able to leave it and not cut back too much.  Should I plant in middle of plot or could I plant towards the back of the plot with back against the shed?

I'd go towards the back, it's a big shrub with a big spread.

It looks good left as shrub and takes any amount of cutting back if it gets out of hand image

Thanks. I think I will plant it towards the back of the plot against the shed then.
