Hard crust on peat free compost

    My compost heap is cooking along gently at 60C. I used last years for this years tomatoes after the same problem with  Levington Pro M3 last year.

    I certainly agree that home made compost will become ever more important for our gardens.  Trouble is tho that so many gardeners don't have sufficient room ( or ingredients ) to have a ready supply so will still be looking to buy decent compost whether for seed sowing or growing on.
    Some people do recommend sterilising compost in a microwave but whether that is worth doing these days given the cost involved is debateable.  Most weed seeds can be plucked out easily as soon as seen - I find that the least problem in bought compost these days.
    Perhaps one answer would be for our present shambles of a govt to offer the crap they produce on a daily basis free of charge to keen gardeners  ;)
