You can get free apps which I.D. all manner of plants from a photo - maybe that'd help identify it and then you'll know better how to deal with it. I'm not saying the apps are infallible, but they are pretty good.
Thank you. Is there anyone in particular you would suggest? I like the bare soil look in my flower beds and have no problem maintaining it ordinarily but this thing has really beat me :-(
Nature abhors a vacuum, so constantly leaving bare soil means it's easy for weeds, especially undesirable bits of grass [often from bird seed] to sow themselves in.
I'd agree - you're either letting it seed or you're leaving roots. Dry/baked soil is far harder to work with than moist soil too, so if you're digging out, do it when soil is well dampened.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
I have wondered in the past if it was black grass but it seems to be a taller grass. I used Picture This plant identification app. It suggests annual bluegrass, a species of meadow grass. To be fair it's the closest image match I've seen. It's the same shape but what I have here is much more purple. Presumably a different variety. Looks like I'm going to have to spend alot of time in my borders.
I use Google UK speciific for searches, but even so I get mainly USA content. If you are not careful with the internet, you will gwt USA worries to double up on your UK ones.
One feature of googling medical concerns is that American bodies are remarkably similar to UK ones. Not so plants and climates.
location: Surrey Hills, England, ex-woodland acidic sand. "Have nothing in your garden that you don't know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful."

Sadly they don't have a picture, and other images of Black Grass on Google look pretty green to me but could that be it?
