Hedge mulch

I planted quite a large hornbeam hedge in Feb

With the cost of compost for it we didn't mulch it at the time and didn't get round to doing it since

Would it be an option to mulch with grass clippings to keep the weeds down or is this wishful thinking?

Any advice welcome

Clearing the grass that's growing in amongst them would be the biggest help to them. It'll be competing for water and nutrients.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained
