I say try white clover work as safe ground cover that does not cause issue with fruit bushes. also with blueberry you might have soil issue since they like wet ground.
@war garden 572 I always thought of clover as being an unwanted weed in my lawn but after your Suggestion and looking it up it seems it is a useful plant in certain circumstances.
We have had some white clover in our lawn, the fruit cage is an extension of the veg patch and has no physical border except for a lawn on 3 sides so as you can imagine in my situation it would be tricky for it to not spread elsewhere.
Thank you for your suggestion as it is plant I will now look at differently. Re the blueberry, it is in a pot at present so the nitrogen and the retained moisture would not be a problem at present.
My first choice, for effectiveness and availability, is always lawn mowings which can be added to regularly. The only drawback is that, with time, they can become slippery for walking on. Excellent for water retention though and add nutrients prior to each top up.
