Poppy or a weed?

Lizzie27Lizzie27 Posts: 12,494
Can anybody identify this self seeded plant in my garden please? I thought it was an ordinary native red poppy as I had several pop up last year but now I'm not so sure, it doesn't look quite right.

I'm pretty sure that it's not a poppy. Do you have bird feeders nearby ?

You dont have to remove it now. Wait a month and that would be clear!

@AnniD, no bird feeders in the back garden but lots of squirrels and it's near a trellis fence/rose arch. I now don't think it's a poppy either.

@tesongo, I might just do that, it looks like there's a bud coming up in the middle.

I've had another look and think it might be either one of the hogweed or cow parsley, both of which grow nearby. I will get OH to dig it out anyway.

I don't think it's cow parsley, possibly small hogweed though. Hard to tell with there being such a lot of that ilk isn't it?

I think you're right and it's hogweed most probably. Anyway it's now in the green bin.

I'm looking suspiciously at the other poppy look alikes now!

That wasn't hogweed, totally wrong leaf shape and growth form, infact I don't think it's an umbelifer at all.
The leaf shape is very poppy like but the habit is wrong. I can certainly see why it got saved as one.
