Thanks, everyone! How would you shape the beds in the middle section, if I could trouble you again? (Probably best seen in last photo.) It's quite small and square. Especially if I screen it off from the section below. Thanks again.
To push it up a notch to the next level you just need to tweak a few things. One question you have to ask yourself is, "How much time do I have to look after the garden?" That should be one of the most important factors when considering what you want and what you need to do to make the garden more interesting.
The shed has a trellis attached so you could grow something up that to make it less obviously a shed or maybe grow something taller in front of it.
The garden seems to have a geometric vibe and you can build on that by using rectangular slabs to make a path to the shed or you can subvert the geometric feel by having a meandering path. Whichever you chose, a path is essential to avoid muddy areas in winter. Google "garden path with rectangular slabs" to see a plethora of ideas that don't just involve a straight line or regular sized slabs.
A small tree would add height but would it cause too much shade?
You can tie the garden together by using the same plants in different places, allowing them to spill over the edges of the beds to soften things and make sure that you have a a fair number of plants that look good in the winter months too......evergreens, grasses etc.
Thank you for all the great advice, Ceres. I wasn't intending to go geometric, but that's what happened!
I'd love a small tree to screen the neighbours, but the right-hand side of the garden is very shady...
Great tip about repeating plants. I've been trying to save money, so a lot of the plants are donations or rescued from the discount racks!
I think I'll also do what others have suggested, and screen off the middle part, horizontally. Maybe create a mid-high hedge on either side of the step.
