Is it too late……

….. to dig a bed out in the front lawn and throw down a some meadow wildflower seeds?

For the last couple of years I’ve been torturing my neighbours with my unmown lawn that I’ve been hoping would spring into a flowering sea of colour. But all I got was tall grass.
I’ve no idea what I’m doing.

I guess I know what I’m doing this weekend then! Good thing the Formula 1 is cancelled!

    A follow up question:

If I dig up and flip over the top layer of turf can I sow seeds on top of that? Or should I pile up the turf elsewhere and sow into the exposed dirt?

You could probably do either, but if you turn over the turf, you'll probably still get grass growing up from the sides.
If you really scalp it, that would help though. I think it would also depend on how viable the soil side of the turf is - if it's a bit solid, it would make it more tricky to get the seed in easily  :)

All we tend to get is very long thick grass and dandelions @Latimer ;)
Much better to set aside an area for your flowers .
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

If they are really wildflower seeds  they don't like rich soil, so I would remove the turves and stack them somewhere to use in a year or so for potting compost. The subsoil will provide better conditions for wildflowers. You could try just an annual flower mix , not necessarily wildflower,  that would cope with rich soil better.  Good luck.

@Fairygirl yeah, I experimented and it didn’t pay off! I’ll dig out the beds and sow seeds for now, slowly adding in shrubs and trees.

@Allotment Boy I think I have packets of both, I’ll probably do a mix and chuck it in
