Re your metal dish.. you have to consider how hot that might get if it's in sunshine. My metal bird bath doesn't get hot, you can buy them pretty cheaply too - and you can use them as feeders if necessary  - to deter rats for instance, which aren't great to have hanging around anyone's food.
You can also make your own concrete bath, (there's loads of ideas on youtube). I'm going to try making a big shallow one for the sparrows, although 6 starlings manage to bathe together in the standard one. 😄
@Slow-worm thank you; didn’t think of the temperature issue!

  • @Fairygirl lots of great ideas thanks
  • I just let my dandelions and docks go to seed. Very cheap  :) I realise not to everyone's gardening taste but the birds are very happy
For some reason I have never seen the birds eat dandelion seeds! Bird watching in the garden is a new thing for me so I will be patient 🙂

I have had goldfinches eating dandelion seeds by the pond this week. The feeder I use sunflower hearts.

We have gazillions of dandelions around here, so there's no way I'm encouraging them in my garden, and enough of them try and seed in, but I know all the birds are out there eating them. I stopped the other day when I was out my walk,  as there was a pair of goldies having a feast on them in the verge just in front of me.
A pair of bullfinches and some goldies a week or two ago doing the same - in more or less the same spot   :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
