Help with my lawn please.

Looking for some help with my poor lawn, as you can see in the pictures it is quite bald!!. I have tries forking it then putting seeds down, but nothing seems to work. It gets quite mossy, I scrape it off but just comes back. Its like that round the edges of the lawn and also gets quite weedy. What can I do to get a nice lawn?? Totally novice gardener.

Thanks in advance.

I’m definitely not a lawn expert but if you have place in the garden where even weeds refuse to grow, then don’t try it with lawn. There is no sunshine in that corner and generally said it’s not a good idea to have lawn so close to a fence. Maybe the kids can play somewhere else and you can use that corner for shady plants. If it’s mossy than it seems to be damp enough for some plants.

    I my garden.

  • Thanks for the reply, would you recommend any particular plants what would grow in that area?

One thing to look out for is who owns the fence if you are thinking of any type of climbers. Or placing anything on the fence in case your neighbour owns it and objects. Happened to me. It surprises me that this is never mentioned in the advice section of GW when a reader asks what to grow up an unsightly border wall or fence. I actually have a neighbour looking over my fence regularly to see if anything is on her fence. According to the deeds it is mine but as it all needed replaced including posts last winter she paid the bill so no complaints from me.

@tim2410dawz8dH9rQi If that corner is damp and shady there are several types of ferns ( both evergreen and deciduous - tall and short ) which may do nicely there. You could probably also get away with interplanting a few bulbs such as Snowdrops. You will probably have to improve that patch of soil tho  :)

  • If the ground is very compacted, aerate it, with a garden fork, you might want to add some sand or top soil into the holes lightly, to soften up the soil so it’s not so firm. Use a shade tolerant grass seed - The Grass People have one that I’ve used and it’s brilliant. If this area is prone to moss you’ll need to scarify in spring and/or autumn every year to prevent build up.

I'm a bit of a lawn obsessive but I've learned that grass is not something to try and force to grow where it doesn't like it. It's just a losing battle. There are plenty of plants that would be happy there. Is it dry or damp most the year?
