Why is it a bad thing to do it in the summer?
In London. Keen but lazy.

For bestresults re formative growth and flowering the pruning is done in spring but do automatic maintenance pruning when I dead head all thru summer, simply by cutting the stem back to the nearest decent looking leaf node.  Makes the plant look a lot better and promotes new flower buds.
