Hi All
I have these tall, thick, bare stems sprouting up in the middle of a patch of Vinca Minor Gertrude Jekyll. The stems are already around 45cm tall. Can anyone identify what it is? To begin with I thought it was new growth for the vinca but Gertrude Jekyll only gets about 10cm tall and has delicate stems and small leaves that crawl along and hug the ground. Any ideas what this might be? Thanks

Looks like Soft Rush [ Juncus effusos ]
How can you lie there and think of England

Looks a bit like it could be some kind of bog grass?

Thanks I've looked up soft rush / bog grass and it does look like it could be some form of plant like that - no idea how it ended up in my garden though! Although with the amount of rain we've had over the winter when most of the garden has been under water at some point it's not surprising if plants now think my garden is a bog! :D
I'm slightly intrigued now and may dig it up and put it in a pot - I have an area of the garden I'm reworking to install a fountain so it might even work there! Thanks for the feedback :)

Don't be tempted! Dig it up and make sure you get out the woody bit of root. If your garden is at all damp you will soon be invaded. There are some lovely Carex sedges that will look good in a pot and not be invasive. Or try Hakonechloa :)

@Buttercupdays thanks that's good to know - I definitely don't want anything invasive! I'll have a look at Hakonechloa - it looks fun!
