Spider Plant roots barely reaching soil

Hi,

All my spider plants seem to grow further and further above the soil with the bulk of the plant hanging over the edge of the pot in some cases and only a few roots actually reaching the soil, this seems to have caused what was previously a lot of healthy plants to largely die out.

Here's an example photo, I know they need repotting anyway as the soil is compacted and likely poor quality now but I would love to know if there is a way I can stop this from happening again as these plants were previously doing very well, thanks!

Too many plants in 1 pot ?  Not planted deeply enough ?  Not the best planting medium ?  Perhaps concentrate on getting the mature plants to a healthy state by removing runners where necessary ?
They are usually one of the easiest house plants so rather a shame yours aren't thriving. I no longer grow them but I think @wild edges does so perhaps he will see this and be able to offer more cogent advice :)

It looks as if you have five plants there that need dividing and planting into individual pots, with new soil. They already have new roots growing, so they should romp away.
