Asparagus

hi, I\f I buy an asapargus crown can i plant it now?  reading online evrythings says to plant in spring, but what will happen if i buy and plant now.

    If you plant now it will come up but don't be tempted to pick any the first season.  Even next year only take a very few spears. They take time to establish and hate disturbance. If you want a decent amount to eat in future years then you want to consider 2-3 crowns at least. Once they establish you can expect a crop for the next 15-20 years  as long as you feed,  mulch, and keep them weed free.

    I doubt you will find any asparagus crowns on sale now, the season for planting them is over.

    You need to consider whether your soil is suitable for them also. They don't like cold wet clay soils.

    @Lizzie27 I would agree with you about the soil...however we are on heavy clay soil and when we planted crowns back in 1978 they gave us a great return. Many years later we did stop as they gave us albeit a great harvest but not for long and took up a great deal of veg place. We still have a "volunteer" that gives us a small return each year...still in heavy clay.
