Is this rose poorly or just how it is?

I can’t tell if it’s just how older wood might look or if it’s sick? Thankyou

There has been a few reports of excessive purple/brown blotching on rose canes this year. It can be an overwintering fungal infection or cane canker but can also be caused by excessively cold temperatures and/or widely fluctuating ones. It’s a bit late to be pruning back hard now and may not be entirely necessary. Jusr keep an eye on those canes and if they start to blacken and die then prune back to healthy green - assuming there is healthy green lower down. Looks to be planted very close to a tree, so if the canopy of that is overshadowing and dripping rain or sap on your rose that won’t help.

You’re welcome, not all me, we had a discussion about it on the rose thread recently 😊

I can’t help thinking your QoS would be healthier and happier planted in a more open site away from the tree, but sometimes needs must..
