Soil for a new Lawn

Hello
I am thinking of laying a new Lawn with new soil and seed.

What is the best soil to use on a new Lawn please? I could buy top soil from a DIY shop, but should I add extra grit and organic matter?

My existing lawn has poor drainage and gets waterlogged in winter causing the grass to die. But it's not too large, so I could just replace the whole lawn, but want to get it perfect this time.

Thanks
Robin

You need to address the drainage first. Unless you do that, it won't matter what you use - it'll still waterlog.
Do you know why it's happening? Lawns which get lots of use get compacted, which is one of the main reasons, especially if you live in a consistently wetter part of the UK.  When I did my new lawn here, I did it as a small raised bed to counteract the compacted clay ground, and high rainfall.
Much easier than battling to sort the whole area   :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
