Sweet Peas wilting.

Why have my nursery bought plugs began to wilt after being in the ground for just 3 wks ?
Ignore the dry ground, I live in Cumbria and have so far not needed to water them due to frequent showers.
It is because of the wet ground that I have so far chosen not to feed them.
Is that my mistake ?
Thanks.

  • Are they wilting, or do they need staking ? :/
When there's always biscuits in the tin, where's the fun in biscuits ?

They aren't wilting, they are falling over because they have nothing to hold on to. They need some kind of support to climb, whether it be a wigwam, some trellis, wire or even pea sticks. They are climbers, not bushy free-standing plants.

    😳 God I feel like a right plonker 🤣
    Thanks to both of you.
  • Don't feel bad. Nobody's born with any knowledge of anything, @powderworks.  Life's just one long learning curve (does that sound a little bit pompous ?)

Yes- get your supports in now, and tie them in as they grow, and they do need lots of food and water, so be prepared to water when they get bigger, as the foliage prevents rain getting in - even where you are. I still have to water mine here, although it's the potted ones more than the ones in the ground. Slugs are very keen on them, so in wetter ground they can disappear overnight.
You don't seem to have much other planting around them so that will be easier. As @Buttercupdays says - they're mainly grown in a framework of canes or trellis, rather than in a line, but if you're growing them that way, it's better to have mesh put between battens/posts to support them.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
