Verbascum

Janie BJanie B Posts: 963
I bought some verbascum plants (Southern Charm) last autumn and overwintered them in the greenhouse. Planted them out recently. Each only has one flower spike. Doesn’t look like there will be any more. Anything I can do to encourage more growth? Thanks

Once they have flowered you can cut them back and they will likely have a second flush of flower later in the year. I've not grown that type, so guessing it's pernnial, and if it is they can take a couple of years to develop a full head of flower but they also tend to be short lived.

I would remove the flower stalks in the hope that would encourage them to put more energy into bulking up, and potentially produce side shoots.

I've got 2 varieties that I've split over the years.
After the first spike has died as said above, cut it off and you'll get more. Do the same when they go over and more will come.
Mine flower for most of the summer.
Just beware of the verbascum caterpillar which can decimate them in no time.

To get more, take root cuttings in early spring, they sprout in no time and will flower the same year.

PS - some of mine are about 5-6 yrs old now and doing very well.

Thx, guys. Think I may pull them up. The bed was really meant for cutting flowers, and it seems these may be better suited to a border.
