Will this Ceanothus tree cause problems later on ?

Hi, was wondering if this Ceanothus shrub/tree will cause any problems to the house. e.g. roots getting into the brick work as its quite close. And any advice on when and how far back it should be trimmed.

It’s not ideal to have big roots so close to a house but that ‘trunk’ size wouldn’t worry me. I have a similar sized and positioned one, inherited with the house, and I wish I (and previous owners) had given it a really good prune every year and not just a light tidy as it is massive now. It’s best to prune after flowering (they are flowering now) and not by more than a third in total. I am not an expert so others may have better advice.

You may need to ask your neighbour if you can prune it from their side too so it will be more even and less tempting for them to prune incorrectly (they would be entitled to prune overhanging branches). I would take some off of the height off and then tidy the edges so it’s not against the wall. You have some lovely shrubs there, although a mix of sun and shade-loving ones so be careful that red Acer isn’t too exposed if you prune the plants around it (looks healthy though).

Enjoy your garden, enjoy the beautiful blue Ceanothus sight and smell this month, and good luck with any pruning @kechong2005zLU8sK2P
