Plant ID(s) please

Hi all

My friend holidaying in Croatia wants to know what these two plants are, but I’m not sure. The blooms are kind of Margarite-ish. But that distinctive foliage...

Any ideas gratefully received.

Many thanks, Johnny

  • Both are Carpobrotus edulis, the Hottentot Fig, native to South Africa.

Thanks so much. Amazingly, that’s what my notoriously unreliable plant ID app came up with, but I doubted it.

We have one that we rescued a few years back. It is growing well (indoors) and we would love it if it flowered.

It's classified as invasive in a few countries @johnnypenstemon I've seen it carpeting cliffs in the South West of the UK, where I believe it is considered a threat to native plants.

If you want something with similar foliage and flowers, and not invasive, try Delosperma. You can get them in various colours. We have always found them to be hardy, but we are in the South East. If you give them very good drainage that will help them get through Winter.

I missed your post KOG but many thanks belatedly; it’s not for me but I’ll pass this excellent recommendation on to the interested party. Cheers, Johnny
