Ground Ivy

Hi
We have just moved into a new house with a lawns that total about 1,000 SQM.
My problem it is largely overgrown with Ground Ivy and naturally would like to at least control this

I looked on some YouTube sites and saw a number that showed products that would eradicate it (excitement), I then found all the products were U.S. based and couldn’t be purchased in this country (disappointment). The active ingredient that works is called sulfentrazone and/or sulfosulfuron.

Has any forum members had success in treating this weed or know of any UK based products that contain this ingredient.

Regards

Les Wilcock

    hibernica growing over the ground.

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

  • Hi and thanks for the response

this is a very shallow rooted little plant, it won't need chemicals, just a bit of gardening.

If it is growing in the grass and you must use a weedkiller, then any of the ones formulated to kill broadleaf weeds in grass ought to work.
Personally I would go down the hard work route and hand weed it out. Mowing on a regular basis would also reduce the problem eventually.
  • Unfortunately it is quite widely spread occupying approx 20% of the garden (200 SQM) so hand weeding will take a lifetime.  I have tried a number of our common Broad Leaf weed killers but it seems to have little effect.  Frustrating that there are products out there that get rid of it but not available.  They are fairly stringent over in the U.S. about what you can use so don’t understand why weedkillers that contain the requisite chemicals aren’t available here.
  • And to answer an earlier question, Mose of the weed is on the lawn

The rules about chemicals are far less stringent in the USA than they are in Britain. They may still use stuff which has been banned here for a long time.

Ground ivy is one of my favourite plants. Make it a wilder place, or just mow out parts of the lawn. If you mow ground ivy it may survive but it will grow in a much more restrained manner hugging the ground closely. Get some clover, daisies, self-heal and other plants in there too. Classical lawns are really green deserts - I much prefer a tapestry lawn or a wilder lawn.
