Planting Out Thunbergia Alata Black Eyed Susan

harmonyharmony Posts: 403
Hi, I have 6 black eyed susan in this pot i bought them as plugs (I ran out of little pots so I put them in a bigger pot all together) I have been hardening them off for the past 2 weeks . I want to put 3 in the ground and 3 in a pot both with an obelisk for them to climb up. They have strong roots so do you think they would be ok to plant now or wait a bit longer. Thanks..

If your particular weather suits and the plants have a decent root system, then yes.
For the ones you want to grow in a pot, just make sure the pot is big enough to accommodate them and thrive :)

Just for reference, this is one plant that easily grew to the top of the garage, so I'd say you are going to need a big pot.

That is gorgeous especially with the blue lobelia :)
I have a pot 40cm diameter  x 30cm high its an old plastic one ( supposed to look like terracotta haha ) and its quite ugly but where I'm thinking of putting it only the top will be seen...

Thanks @harmony and @philippasmith2 yes, it was very nice and the leaf cutter bees loved it, the petals were a particular favourite of theirs.

I got a flashback there @Sheps, when you said 'you're going to need a big pot' - I'm thinking Jaws.... :D

It might be a good idea to separate them very soon @harmony - before the roots get too tangled and you risk spoiling them.
The 3 you want to put in a container will be ok if left together in there for now, but it might be worth getting the others planted if the site's ok and the weather's favourable, unless you can find something else to put them in separately. Even used, plastic milk bottles with holes in the bottom, or similar, will be fine if you feel they're not quite ready yet. Small plants can be a bit vulnerable if going into the ground when the conditions aren't as good as they might be.

Always a bit tricky at this time of year with weather etc.   :)

I watched it the other day @Fairygirl one of my favourite films.

Despite being a young adult when it came out @Sheps, I never saw it until a few years ago. Not really sure why.  I think it's one of those films that's best seen on the big screen though- like many films of that time, and the early 80s, because of the special effects.
I love Richard Dreyfuss though. The Goodbye Girl is one of my favourite films, and Close Encounters - another film best on the big screen.

Thanks for that info Fairygirl it didn't cross my mind that the roots might get tangled. I have been rummaging  in the garage and found some pots :) so I will separate them tomorrow..
