Frost Damaged

TamtamIITamtamII Posts: 5
Hi

I'm a bit of a novice with plants but recently bought a house with a lot of them. We have a climbing Star Jasmine plant on our house that I think is frost damaged. You can see from the photo that it's mainly brown and thinning. There are new shoots at the very top. What can I do to repair the brown areas?

Thanks

My personal instinct is to cut right back to around 12 to 18 inches high.  Others may disagree though.

I think also being very close to the house wall will have put it under extra strain from the extreme weather last year.

Whereabouts in the UK are you?  (a general location will do :) ).

We also have "lovely" sparrows nesting so can't cut right back. I'm in Hertfordshire.

    Thanks

In that case, you'd have to leave it until August at least :)
Hopefully others will have some more advice.

It should put on new growth over the next couple of months. If they have a mild winter they hold onto their leaves until the new ones replace them, if it's a harsh winter they drop their leaves early.

I really don't know how cold it needs to be to kill the stems, but the fact there is growth further up suggests that there maybe life in the middle section. You could try gently scraping at the bark and see if there's any green underneath.

It got down to about -10°c here.
