Ideas for Metal Obelisk

I have two open top metal obelisks arriving in the next few days, both 1.5m tall.

I had thought of group 3 clematis for these but perhaps the community here may have other ideas.  I plan to put them in a border which should offer plenty of shade around the roots with abelia, heuchera and astilbe and offer good morning sun into early afternoon, and then early evening sunshine.

I don't need the plants to be too wide, but was also thinking of what I could add for winter interest?

Any recommendations would be much appreciated and specific varieties are most welcome.

Thanks in advance.

For obelisks that size you're going to have to go for short clematis that won't exceed their bounds.   This would be a good one - https://clematisontheweb.org/new-clemdetail.cfm?dbkey=4372 as wood this one - https://clematisontheweb.org/new-clemdetail.cfm?dbkey=201

They are both group 3 so need to be cut down at the end of winter, given a good feed and mulch and then trained round your obelisk as they grow.   As long as you mulch the crowns to protect them from forsts, you can also cut them down in late autumn to make things neater and then enjoy the shape of the obelisks over the winter and use them to hang bird feeders for entertainment.

  • Ah thank you @Obelixx, that's really useful about the size clematis, should look no larger than 2m ideally in terms of height.  The fist one also has a pretty shape flower - not one I have seen before.
