Tall Slim Shrubs

I have a problem area at the back of one of my borders; I had a ceanothus which I moved from behind the greenhouse as it was showing signs of life again.  Unfortunately it looks like it has died.  I need a tall slim shrub with a small root system to fit in behind a dicentra alba and next to a Sem tree shrub.  I'm thinking of an evergreen to offer interest all year round and disguise some of the neighbours fence.

Other plants nearby are hardy geranium, heuchera, astilbe, abelia, campanula and a variegated wegela.

Any recommendations are most welcome.

I live in South Buckinghamshire on Chiltern/Thames Valley border so a hardier shrub may be beneficial as we can dip below -5.  The position is south facing with a magnolia tree in the lawn opposite giving some shade.

Thanks in advance.

I’ve used Laurus nobilis, Griselinia littoralis and Thuja plicata to fill gaps in a mixed shrub border to screen the view of my neighbour’s home office.  They are all evergreen, hardy and can be maintained as tall slim shrubs with annual pruning. They are in an east facing border with sun until midday then light shade.
    Wirral. Sandy, free draining soil.

  • Thank you @Plantminded - definitely some food for thought with those three recommendations.  My neighbour has Laurus Nobilis so I may have to have a gander next door.
