Roald Dhal rose in pot

BouncingBackBouncingBack Posts: 142
From what I've read they seem robust, but I have a small bush that needs to go in a pot permanently. All I have in the shed is a bit of peat free multi purpose compost and half a bag of John Innes no. 3. I have time today to plant it, but if this soil isn't suitable for permanent planting I'll leave it until the weekend. Will it be ok? Do I need some gravel in the bottom because I have no potting gravel either?

Personally I would be fine with a mix of MPC and JI3. (To be honest I've been finding JI3 a bit too dense and solid by itself anyway). There is no reason to add gravel in the bottom so you're fine to skip that part too! Just find a couple of crocks to stop the soil spilling out of the drainage hole.

And just to add, plants are hardly ever in a pot permanently. You'll probably want to replenish the soil at some point, and you may find you need to go up a pot size.

I had a look online and it said this soil mix is fine so went for it. In doing so I have discovered rose rust, and I only bought the plant at the weekend! So my next question is what do I do?!

Pick off the dodgy leaves and bin them. You can treat it with a milk/water solution if you want, which may or may not help but makes you feel as if you are doing something.

Haha ok! It's supposed to be a relatively disease free type so I'm annoyed to already be dealing with an infection only days in.

It is annoying. I bought a rose with rust last year, and had it replaced, with another rustbucket. But I did the above (defoliate, milk spray) and ended up with two healthy roses, one of which now lives in my neighbour's garden.
