Help with ID on two "plants"?

Hi, I have these two beauties (or not?) popping up, the one on the left is huge where it has grown.  Can anyone help me identify if these are friend or foe?  Many thanks as I need to get them out if they are going to be invasive.

That looks like Green Alkanet ... it can be a thug and a PITA to get rid of ... dig it out and keep an eye out for more ... it may take a few years to get rid of it as it will regrow from tiny bits of root as well as seeds.

I agree green alkanet which is invasive and forget me knots, which can spread but are easier to deal with and something most of us love.

I agree green alkanet.  The other one looks like forget me not Myosotis.  I really dislike that and pull it up, but most people including Monty like it.
  • Oooh thank you! I haven't heard of green alkanet but have looked it up and agree. It is definitely coming out. Looks like you can dig it out successfully or resort to chemicals so I'll try digging first.

I'm in the minority here - I wouldn't entertain the forget me nots either - I hate the colour!
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Alkanet gas deep roots, like Comfrey, the bits that break off will grow.  Don't dig, fork.  Use your largest fork and at the same time pull slowly and steadily.  Try to get as much out whole as possible.

  • Thank you! Will give it ago - soil is wet today so might be a good time to do it.
