Blank Canvas - need help

Hi,

Hoping that you can help me regarding key plants and planting ideas for the following.

Having spent a long time digging out and building terraces on a hill side (still have two to go) overlooking the moors I am now at the point of planning/planting.  This is the point that a lot of back breaking work has brought me to, which I thought would be the "fun" part.  However, it has highlighted is my severe lack of knowledge.

The top terrace has a lawn which on which we have a seating area - around this are four beds ready for planting - mostly quite small averaging 3m x 2m

The second terrace presented quite a few problems due to underlying rock so remains on a slight slope - I think I have sucessfully planted ferns and grasses with some summer bulbs (iris etc) which I hope will thrive (first signs of life are now emerging).

The third terrace has another seating area and three raised beds awaiting planting - these are somewhat larger averaging 5m x 3m.

Additionally there is a 1m width strip of land which is to the right of the steps that get me to and from each terrace.

Also there are one or two thin strips of land which I would like to plant (0.5m width).

In my minds eye I would like the top terrace to be mainly pinks/purples/whites and the bottom terrace oranges/yellows/blues with the part next to the steps being mainly white and green.  Apologies if this is a rather basic idea - any input is welcome.

I would appreciate any help you can give me regarding shrubs, perennial planting, climbers etc.  I will not be planting any trees as there are a row of established trees running down the left hand side of the plot.  Additionally I do not want any plant to be too tall when it reaches maturity as the view is very important to me.

Thanking you in advance for your input.

    We need some photos
Also, where are you. Which direction does your garden face and what's your soil like?

    Hi B3

Thanks for getting back to me - the site is in Yorkshire, North facing but is not overlooked so gets the sun reasonably well when it is out (apart from the trees down the left hand side).  The soil is pretty much neutral and it has been barren apart from such things as window units, carpets, rabbit hutch and many brambles nettles etc.  But will get some more manure/compost dug through it.  Photos to follow

The setting is rather special, with all the mature trees, and I would commit fully to creating a woodland garden theme. This instagram account may provide some inspo! Will Teare (@woodland.edge) • Instagram photos and videos

    Hi Loxley

Thankyou for taking the time to answer.

The amount of space that I am currently dealing with is roughly half of the garden.  The bottom half - roughly 13m in width and 50m in length runs gently down to a small stream - this has wild garlic and bluebells.  I had intended with a delicate and sympathetic tidying to leave it more natural.  Your link has given me food for thought.
