Potting On Seedlings

Good afternoon,

I collected and planted beech masts/seeds in the autumn, several of which are now getting first proper leaves.  They are currently in seed trays and I’m presuming shouldn’t stay much longer.
So my question would be, when should I pot on, size pot and what compost/soil mix?

Thank you.

I can't help you with your question (sorry but I'm certain someone else will), I just wondered if you found they germinated well please?

@alfharris8 about 75% have come through, all of which seem to be healthy. Time will tell what happens next.

If they have true leaves now yes you can pot them on. 3" pots to start with and when you see several roots coming out of the bottom then pot on again
I'd suggest a John Innes compost either No2 or No3, but do add about 20% (by volume) of horticultural grit as by itself JI can get quite claggy. Small bags of grit in GC about £2.

Alternatively - you could sieve some garden soil and add a bit of grit - it's what they're used to

Brilliant to do what you have done and achieved. Next question though is what are you going to do with the the seedlings/plants as they grow? Have you decided on an area in your garden for them?

@Pete.8 thank you. I’ll get them potted this week then and hopefully see them continue to progress.

@bertrand-mabel Hi, I’ve got an area in the garden I’m going to work on over the summer/autumn, so hopefully they will create a border of sorts to this. Patience will be the key, much like most things...
