Lidl Lettuce

Just an interest question really but I remember buying a trio of lettuces from Lidl (other discount supermarkets are available) that were sold in the kind of tray you would often by strawberries in.
The lettuces were quite a decent size yet seemed to grow from a small cube of root. I always thought it looked very efficient space wise and wondered if this could be successfully replicated by those with less growing room? Thanks.

  • I often wondered that but I think they may chop off the majority of the root and then sell the live plants with only some of the root?

I suspect it's done with a lot of fertiliser, think hydroponic growing with a small bit of earth there to hold the roots and make it look good on the shelf.
  • We always grow lettuce from Lidl seeds and have always been pleased with the results.

Just managed to get the last cucumber plant from Lidl to replace on that didn't make it.  It was hidden at the back and turned out to be a very good plant that it doing well.

    A much better answer.

Thanks all. Sadly nothing that is easy to replicate at home.

For many years some supermarkets sold "living leaves". We used these to then sow in our polytunnel to have a great harvest of lettuce throughout the year. These are no longer available and possible the company has stopped production.

Here is my black seed Sampson lettuce grown in a little hydroponics system.  I planted into cotton wool balls and feed with an organic hydroponic feed.

I cut the whole top off and leave about 2 inches on the bottom to regrow and get a second or third crop before they bolt.
