What is eating my Bearded Iris flowers?

The bearded iris have sprung into production this week. Lots of flower stalks suddenly visible. I went away for two days and came back today to find half of them have been eaten. I can't see the culprit but not sure what to look for. Any ideas what's likely to be munching them? I've had a small amount of leaf damage in previous years but nothing like this.

    Snails?

I agree - I lost many flowers on mine last year for the same reason.
Fortunately this year so far so good

Thanks both. I was wondering about slugs or snails. They're probably hiding in the gap behind the cold frame which is beside that iris bed.

There's something different every year isn't there? Last year was lily beetles which did so much damage I thought my newly-planted martagon lilies were dead. But they've come back and are just about to flower pretty much undamaged
