Vespa field beans

DevrimDevrim Posts: 13
Happy bank holiday weekend everyone!

I planted some Vespa field beans as green manure at the end of last year, and couldn't resist leaving a few (too many...) growing now to taste the beans.

I'm wondering if anyone can advise how long from now to harvest, roughly?

I need to put some French & Runner beans in this spot (just about germinated, in modules) and wondering how long until I can clear the field beans and plant them out!

I don't grow field beans but the closely related broad beans (I'm actually going to grow them soon after seeing a Huw Richards video where he believes they are superior) and your field beans are slightly further along than those which are just starting to show flowers. I would normally be harvesting the broad beans in mid June so I think you may have at least a month before yours are ready to harvest but I don't have any practical experience so helpfully someone else will be able to advise a better estimate.
  • I'd be tempted to interplant the French and runners between the Vespas, then just cut the Vespas back to the ground when they've finished.

That's a good idea @StephenSouthwest. I can get a few of them in, at least, in the spots where the Vespa isn't quite so bushy. thanks for the tip!
