Storing peat compost?

How long do people find unopened bags of peat compost can be stored?

I bought quite a few bags recently that were on a good offer, and I'm thinking of buying some more whilst the offer is on, if it can be stored long term I may even buy it in bulk.

It should store for considerable amount of time ( upto to a year , starts to degrade after ) but it must be kept under cover / not get to wet.

Peat is a plant product that under acidic and wet conditions has reached a stable point in its decompositon.  Moist, it should last a lifetime.   When it dries out it starts to give off methane and oxidise,
