Acer not leafing out

So, all my other acers have leafed out. Apart from one. It has started but seem to have stalled. There are some branches that look dead. It's the biggest and most established of all mine. Some of branches are a different colour. Being that it is still early, would this Acer just be binding it's time or is it dead. I've scratched, but that's inconclusive.

I have 3 different varieties, all come out diff times.
One is fully out a few weeks ago, 2nd getting there and my 3rd is just starting to show.
All similar locations, been like it every year.

Cool. Thanks for the promising response.  I think they all came into leaf at same time last year. But my NZ fern also unfurled earlier, and at the moment that still isn't showing signs of life. It's just annoying when you see all your other trees and shrubs woken up and having lost a number of other flowers I was fearing the worse.

Sorry to say but those dark patches on the lower trunk and parts of branches don't look good to me. It may be that the sap has started to rise and bud break has begun but stalled. Having the slate mulch right up to the trunk is not a good idea either, roots need air as well as moisture.
Wait a while longer and fingers crossed,  but I am not optimistic.

That was my concern with the colour of the bark. The buds that have opened have like that for over a week now. Suppose it's too late to move the slate out out the way as a last ditch attempt to save it.

I don't think that one will survive for the reasons given by @Allotment Boy
