With a one bin/heap composting system, the top will always be poorly rotted. You have to speed it up some way (there are several ideas but I have no wxperience). Or use from the bottom.
To save space, You could combine leaf and general garden waste composting into one. Or, You could mulch with unrotted leaves.
location: Surrey Hills, England, ex-woodland acidic sand. "Have nothing in your garden that you don't know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful."
Tricky then @lydiaann. I made my bins smaller so that I could use them that way - 1 to fill, 1 to rot, and to get a better site for them. That might be an option for you. I don't need water butts though, so that always helps. Could you put your collected leaves somewhere else? In bags? I find they break down better in bags, although that might just be my climate helping.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
I think we're getting away from the horny problem of the slugs! But, I AM taking all suggestions on board, I promise! Northumberland calls, time to pack! Thank you SO much, everyone...I knew I could count on good, sound advice once more!
