Pineapple Broom

DaveGreigDaveGreig Posts: 189
I’ve just germinated some Pineapple broom seeds. I’m going to bring them on in the greenhouse for a couple of years and I have a very sheltered south-west facing patio area at the back of my house to eventually place one in. The trouble is the soil underneath the pavers is thick heavy clay and not the well drained loam required.

My question is, has anyone here grown or tried to grow them in pots and what were the results?

I had one on my pergola many years ago.
It was planted in heavy clay.
I dug out a decent size hole, put 2-3" grit in the bottom then mixed in some home-made compost with the dug out soil and planted it. I made sure to mulch with compost every spring.
I thrived there for years until I decided to plant roses on the pergola instead.

Thanks for that Pete.8. The clay is complicated by the fact that it’s next to the house and there are pipes and drains etc..  so I’m not keen to dig down or plant in the soil around them. It would probably have helped If I’d mentioned that initially.

Mine did get up to about 12-15ft in places so they can grow big.
I'm sure it can be grown in a pot - probably a very big one, but it's not something I've done.
Hope someone can answer your question

You could try it in an open-bottomed raised bed (or a large bottomless pot). It will have the drainage it likes within the pot but will be able to throw some roots into the underlying soil as well, which makes watering less onerous.

  • Hi Dave,
Could you tell me what process he used to germinate the scenes please?
    Thanks.
