Is this Japanese Maple dead?

I'm thinking this Japanese Maple might be dead, and I should get rid of it.
Would welcome any opinions on if it is actually dead.

    Looks dead to me. To be sure, scratch the bark to see if it's green underneath.

    Thanks very much B3. I just tested now, and it's white underneath, so must be dead.

    They sell nice little ones for £4 in Asda at the moment if you want to replace it. Probably best to work out why it died first though so it doesn't happen again.
