Black leaves on plum tree

We inherited this plum tree in our new garden. Last year it produced lovely succulent small plums! Today, I've noticed lots of black leaves on it, and can't figure out the problem.
We have had a drought here, but last week got quite a lot of rain suddenly. I've been watering it from our rain butt, and have fed it.
Any ideas?
